Advisory Visiting Teacher (AVT)


Advisory Visiting Teacher is an experienced classroom teacher who has specialised knowledge about disability or student behaviour. Their main role is to support school staff in enabling students with a disability or high behaviour requirements to access and participate in the curriculum.

They work across a number of schools within the district and visit on a needs basis.  Students needing this support must go through an identification and verification process.  AVTs provide specialist knowledge in a range of areas including areas of:

  • Disability: Hearing Impaired, Physical Impairment, Intellectual Impairment, Speech Language Impairment, Visual Impairment
  • English as a Second Language /English as a Second Dialect
  • Behaviour

They work in a variety of ways within the school, from an advisory role, providing support and resources, planning individual educational plans, working within the classroom, to individual or small group teaching.  Methods of service delivery and support given are relative to the particular needs of the student.​
